At least once a year I like to make a meal that is made of ingredients from my garden.
Kale, beans, potatoes, zucchini, garlic, squash blossom, thyme, and eggs. The not from the garden but still local: butter and salt.
I'm thinking a lot about where and how I want to water. I am very stingy with water. If I want a more productive garden I'm going to need to water more.
Still, there are exciting things happening. Almost overnight the peppers that I am growing in containers set fruit. There is one almost red tomato and hopefully more coming. And apples. quince, pears, peaches and grapes to look forward to. More blue berries and currants to pick. Some Swiss chard, lemon cucumbers and sprouting broccoli coming along. The zucchini is looking a bit more productive.
There are happy bees, songbirds, and squirrels (although I'd rather not have the squirrels) taking shelter and finding food. Two hummingbirds were just working their way across the front garden.
Yesterday was much cooler than it has been. Cloudy and windy. The sun was back today. I went for a walk with a friend at the harbor where one can look out across the bay to the San Juan Islands or back at Mt. Baker...
