I really wanted to write something fun and lighthearted to read (wings do inspire a lot of fantasy after all), but that really just wasn’t a direction I could go so I’m up on my soap box again. I’m worried about the winged occupants of our world.
I’ve been reading a lot about bees abandoning their hives. A recent study says that cell phones may be the reason. I’ve also read, and believe this to be more likely, that although cell phones may be a factor, there are a lot of environmental reasons (pesticides and GMO’s for example) that could be coming into play. I am very concerned about this. Loss of bees puts our food sources at risk.
Last night I was listening to a report on NPR about a bird refugee that is used by swans and geese that might be impacted by the US Navy wanting to build a runway for their planes. It’s yet another example of human needs versus the needs of the other inhabitants of plant Earth. I feel strongly that humanity needs to learn that the natural world is not a resource that we utilize, but that we have to coexist with the other species of Earth to be able to survive. That includes the winged things of our world.
I have to wonder too, if the popularity of things with wings as a motif in designs is due to our desire to fly away from all of our worries and cares. Maybe I should put wings on my soap box. For now the birds are beginning to sing and there’s a beautiful sunrise to go enjoy.
