Poor Briar. That's her "Why me?" look.
I finished up the seam on this hat yesterday. Not sure what brand of yarn it is, I lost the tag.
I've decided a stash is an interesting thing. It's nice to know I have a supply of yarn to work from, and yet, a stash gets out of control so quickly. Especially when the cat discovers where it is hidden.
Home made vanilla pudding with pear topping. The pears were sauteed in a little butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Everything local but the cornstarch to thicken the pudding, vanilla, and cinnamon.
One pound of sweet potatos grown in black planters. I started with 4 plants. What was put out in the ground died so I don't have a comparison of whether the planters worked better or not. I also don't have a price yet on what local sweet potatoes will be selling for, so no figures on cost effectiveness. What I do know is that they were so good roasted with some olive oil and salt for dinner.
There were quite a few little fingers of sweet potato that I think would have grown larger if there had been more heat this summer.
(There is a little carrot tucked in there too. )
Took some cuttings before I pulled the plants. Not quite sure what I'll do with them if they root. If I can keep them alive until next spring I could plant them.
A couple weeks ago I was standing at the bus stop watching two crows hop across the road. They'd get a few feet across and then a car would approach and they'd hop back. They did this several times. Finally they flew up on to the wires. I couldn't help but think, "Did someone forget to tell them they could just fly across the road?"
Of course, maybe they were just playing with the cars...?
I thought this was such a wonderful prompt and I started to have all kinds of ideas. What I did not have was a lot of time this weekend. So here are a few pictures of my first typewriter. My grandparents got it for me for my 13th birthday. At that point I spent a lot of time writing.
The paper that I inserted is a printout of an experiment I'd done on the computer. Such different tools....
I also wanted to share a lit bit from a book I"m reading right now. It really captured my interest. Lynda Barry is referring to stories:
"They can't transform your actual situation, but they can transform your experience of it. We don't create a fantasy world to escape reality, we create it to be able to stay. I believe we have always done this, used images to stand and understand what otherwise would be intolerable."
Sunrise at 6:53, sunset at 7:14. Slowly the lights are creeping on through the house as the skies darken.
But, I'm better than I use to be at turning some of them off. So, more shadows, more mystery. I'm liking it.
A comment from Melinda at One Green Generation got me to thinking about uses for "unripe grapes," so I did a little research.
The results? Verjuice. It's the juice of unripe grapes and it's used in cooking, much like vinegar or wine. So if those grapes don't ripen up they're getting juiced.
Actually, I did eat one tonight. Very sweet and good. I found some more info about making Verjuice at 18thC Cuisine.
The first large tomatoes were picked this week and one tomatillio. Salsa is going on the menu.
There is also some Swiss chard to nibble on. And a small handful of autumn raspberries. Maybe in a day or two the first yellow scallopine squash will be big enough to eat.
