Broke down and bought tomatoes from the farmer's market for preserving. Mine are still pretty much green, except for the occasional hand full of cherry tomatoes I've been getting. There is just the tiniest blush of color to the larger tomatoes. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that they will be far enough along that they will continue ripening if they have to be brought inside.
First canning project with tomatoes was to make roasted tomato sauce. Oh yum! I used what did not get processed for a topping on pizza. It is so nice to have bread dough in the refrigerator so that I can just grab a handful, stretch it out and bake it.
Tomorrow I'm going to can a few whole tomatoes. Next weekend I'll be making spicy ketchup.
As for the garden, the grapes are just starting to show a little color. This time last year they were pretty much ripe. Still hoping that something will ripen.
I picked the one and only pear that ripened on my tree this year (it's still young). I also picked one apple to see how ripe it is. I'm thinking they probably need a couple more weeks. I have about 15 or so apples on my "King" tree.
The sweet potato leaves are getting a tinge of purple to them. I suspect it's because we've had several nights that were below 50 degrees F. It's getting harder to not poke around under the leaves to see if there is anything there.
The fall crop of cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and brussels sprouts are looking good. There are also some tiny leaves of lettuce and spinach coming up.
