Cranberries from Olympia. Not quite local, but in state!
Also potatoes, tomatoes, a few apples and onions.
Today I picked up Jerusalem, a Cookbook by Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi from the library (recipes online to explore here). I was struck by this in the introduction:
"Yet we still think of Jerusalem as our home. Not home in the sense of the place you conduct your daily life or constantly return to. In fact, Jerusalem is our home almost against our wills. It is our home because it defines us, whether we like it or not."
Today I also picked up a jar of fireweed honey at the farmer's market. The person selling it made a comment about it being a nice honey. I nodded my head and added "But part of my decision is probably based on nostalgia." She said, "Are you from Alaska?" And I answered, "Yes, at least a good part of my childhood was spent there."
I've never considered Alaska home except for when my family actually lived there, but there is also no doubt that part of who I am was shaped by that time in my life.
