"After all, a fence is an enclosure: It needs to enclose something and won't do its job if it doesn't provide a feeling of being inside something that wraps around you, like a pair of sheltering arms." The Magic Land, Designing Your Own Enchanted Garden by Julie Moir Messervy
My neighbors and I were pretty sure the old fence wouldn't last another winter so it's been replaced. One of my brothers, the neighbor and I were outside still hammering and sawing at 9:30 last night by the light of a lamp and with a flashlight. My neighbor put the last of the fencing in place this afternoon.
I am thinking I need to reread Messervy's book again soon. It's been a gardening favorite for a long time. Thinking about how a blanket or a sweater can be an enclosure too.
