alphabet chain

I cut strips, thinking to make a chain. Realized quickly the paper would be to stiff for glue stick to work.

Switched to paper from an old dictionary and realized even more quickly that I could make an alphabet chain.

year of making...or setting goals

No sewing this weekend just a bit of arranging and playing. 

The year of making...my goal to make just a little bit everyday started off well, but fizzled out somewhere in July. 

I am never at my most productive when it is hot. 

I want to regroup a bit...and set a goal to post every day for the rest of the year. 

Making can be as simple as capturing a thought, an image. 

Sometimes simple meets a need the best. 

P.S.  The stitching on these squares was done by a friend.

Field notes:  It's been down into the high 20's a couple nights now.  Cold enough that the last roses and calendulas should be done for the year.  Picked a big handful of parsley before it got to cold.

Snow in the forecast for Tuesday.  Maybe a white Thanksgiving?

Today's making:

A bit of woven wool from Jude.  One section saved to stitch, one section chopped into tiny little pieces, combed into roving and then spun into yarn; and a third piece encased in felt:

Nothing is too small to be useful. 

 

unfamiliar fruit

A persimmon and a medlar.  I bought these at the farmer's market last week, but am waiting for them to ripen a bit more before I eat them. Neither of these is common to this area. 

I've never tried a medlar before but am intrigued. As for the persimmon, I'm still figuring out if I like them.  Every once in a while I try one again to see.  Most research says that children need to be exposed to a new food at least 10 times before they will even try it, let alone like it (info about this here). 

Thinking about the unfamiliar, 

about how we might hold it in our hands

and learn to make space.

asking, receiving, giving...labeling

I've finished reading Amanda Palmer's The Art of Asking or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help.

(On October 31st actually, "Trick or Treat": how funny to do that on one of the few days that it's culturally acceptable to go around asking people for something, at least if you are a child.)

My recommendation in one sentence:  I loved it.  It won't be a book for everyone, but it's one I'm so glad to have read.

I've struggled with what to say past that. 

Thinking about comfort zones and labels. 

Is this heart open or broken? Or is it the same thing?
