#49 what I want to say

To not be present with what is happening in the country I call home seems inappropriate today.

I have spent most of my life working with young children. We teach them that hurting each other and destroying property is never okay. This doesn’t change when we grow up. There has to be another way to bring attention, to create change, to live our lives. Violence is not the answer nor can it become the focus.

What really matters will become lost if it does.

#48 it rained today

I stitched rain puddles and hearts.  And listened to an On Being Interview . I'll add this to my journal:

It's still raining and it's a slow sad dance, but there is still music...

#47 truth in gardening

Slugs and other things happen...

Still...the colors are pretty.

#46 heart surgery of a sort

Favorite garden tool: a knife.

It cuts vines and grass, slices through roots. Works well for planting seeds.

I meant to do a lot more today than I did.

There was sitting in the garden day dreaming...

And heart surgery of a sort.

 

#45 if a color was a lullabye or a whisper

It might be this.

About a tablespoon of Sweet woodruff root simmered in about a cup of water for about 2 hours.  The fabric was in the dye bath for about an hour of that simmering and soaked overnight and then rinsed with water. 

The most red is the cotton, the shimmery is silk/rayon and the peach is wool.

Next thing to investigate is how color fast it will be but I'd say that this is well worth the effort.

 

 

#44 losing the leaf pattern

A year ago, maybe two, I experimented with pounding indigo leaves with a hammer on to a shirt I'd made. 

Some leaves turned out crisp and others smudged a lot.

It didn't really make a pattern I wanted to wear.

In to the indigo vat it went this weekend!

Problem solved!

#43 accomplishments

Someone special to me turns 93 years old today. 

Even though I couldn't be with her (and to be honest, usually am not), I did celebrate with her...

That's oregano on top and a rather sad peach on the side. 

A little spicy with the sweet.

Other things of note...

First pea of the year.

First loaf of bread made with the sourdough starter. 

It needed more salt but was still tasty and made me happy.

Snippets from the garden. 

There are still lots of weeds to pull but the urgent areas are done. The blueberries and gooseberries won't be choked by the bindweed. 

Fingers crossed there is no lettuce in the CSA this week.  I have a lot.

A bit of sweet woodruff root has been collected for a dye experiment.  The roots are tiny so I'll start very small to see if it is worth doing.  I do have a lot of sweet woodruff though...

I thought about how the amount of stitching changes the way the cloth feels when you hold it...

#40 things can be beautiful...

when they fall apart.

It can also be exhausting.
