As a child the Fourth of July was a favorite holiday. Where I lived in Alaska it was celebrated for days with logging events, fishing derbies, games, tugboat races, fireworks and a parade.
There have been a few more parades for the Fourth as a teenager and adult, but nothing really compares to the child memories of celebration.
It was the biggest of parties, a celebration of community.
At least, that is how I remember it.

This was posted before the news of the shooting at the parade. I will have more to say tomorrow (July 6th) about some things that I am thinking about and processing.
