#54 winter

This morning's snow was beautiful. Big feathery flakes.

Very little of it stayed on the ground though.

Tonight's mark making, oak gall and iron and a pencil.

#53 pink

Sunrise. 

It snowed for several hours today but nothing accumulated.

It's noticeable, that the days are getting longer.

There aren't plum blossoms yet, but they are on my mind.

I like how the black ink seeped into the petal on the lower flower, need to try that again.

 

#52 many things...altered

It snowed during the night but there wasn't much accumulation.  Rain by about 6 AM and now the sun has come out. Still hoovering in snow temperatures...

it's in the forecast everyday for the coming week. 

I worked on stitching blocks together today. It's close to the 6 foot by 6 foot size I am aiming for. There will need to be some smaller blocks along the edges to even things out. 

And I experimented with making leaf rubbings with a white crayon and then layering ink over the top.

And then layering photos.

#51 things I love (not lightly)

I was able to get some fabric out of my basket...the boys were exploring the dripping faucet in the bathroom (to keep the pipes from freezing).

I also added some petals to the circle made yesterday.

I used white crayon as a resist.

While doing these, I listened to an "On Being" conversation with Nick Offerman.  I already had listened to another conversation with Ezra Klein so I knew it would be one I would find interesting.   There is so much I love in this conversation I don't even know what part I would share...it's about making, words, how we live.

The conversation is just as much about Wendell Berry as Nick Offerman. If you love Wendell Berry's writing it is worth listening to hear Nick Offerman read Wendell Berry (at around 31 minutes).

#50 a cold day

It's been cold...really cold. The wind has finally stopped though and that helps.  Still too cold to prune, it would all be in the shade.

Snow/rain in the forecast for the next week. 

Not planting peas yet!

This crocus is really trying.

Since it's too cold to garden, I decided to play with some earth pigment today and added rose hip ink.  The earth pigment has a lot of texture.

 

I was also going to sew on my "Good Enough" quilt but Gibson decided to nap in the basket with the fabric strips. I didn't have the heart to move him.

Timber didn't care about disturbing him.  But Gibson didn't move and Timber couldn't get comfortable.

Timber gave up and joined Widget on top of the armoire.

And I sewed something else...because Gibson still hadn't moved.

#49 a collection

Dots/orbs/crystal balls or maybe bubbles from the last few days all together. 

This morning's dot was altered by a cat tail. 

I think it's a comet now...

#47 a few experiments

Yellow and blue don't make green in this world...

From left to right: onion ink, coffee ink, turmeric ink, indigo ink and iron/oak gall ink.

I really like how the segments appeared in the iron/oak ink, rather like where a bean seed would be found in a pod.

Coffee ink as a base with drops of turmeric and indigo.

#46 duck, duck...goose?

Trying again for a swan but I didn't get enough bend in the neck.

Thinking about the story of The Six Swans where a sister has to make shirts to turn her brothers from swans to humans after they have been cursed.

Today I noticed the first brave crocus popping up...

Not sure how well they will do, more cold in the forecast and a possibility of snow.

I went to a seed swap and skill share today.  Brought home some pepper seeds.

There were swans in the fields, still wintering over.

At home, I filled a page with bird like shapes but never managed something that looked swan like.

This is a pretty good duck though.
