I might be able to make pigment out of this rock. I keep holding it in my hand, considering how old it might be. It could be a few thousand years old. Some rocks are a million years; the oldest billions of years old.
A red twig dogwood, native to this area. The leaves less than a year old and one of my favorite Autumn colors. Left to fall, they will become mulch.
I will try making pigment from them too.
